I’m not a huge fan of the musical Hair. Mostly, I just don’t understand it. I’ve seen it two or three times and still leave the theatre unable to recall what just happened and what kind of acid trip I have just witnessed. Secondly, I completely botched “Let the Sunshine In” in an audition for the musical at my high school, and I’ve never quite recovered.

However, while I was listening to the original soundtrack again and prepping my usual lyric commentary, I realized how great most of the songs are. Like really. The lyrics are rich with pop-culture word-smithing. The arrangements are unexpected, layered, and just the perfect level of chaos. So maybe my problem is with the staging or the plot. I don’t know. Cause the actual music is great.

One of my lyrics from the show (hear it in #5 and reprised in #27) brought me to Manchester England England. And it doesn’t take a genius genius to love this city.

Guess I should say please 😉

Yaaas! Tempo changes, choral elements, dizzying lyrics, falsetto, an reference to the national anthem. Everything about this song is just great.
